Survivors in the Criminal Justice System

At NJCCS, we recognize that women may encounter the criminal justice system in different and complex ways. As survivors of violence seeking justice, or as individuals who have been charged in the aftermath of trauma. Our goal is to provide nonjudgmental, trauma-informed support to help women navigate these systems with dignity, safety, and empowerment.

Women As Survivors

Many women are forced to engage with the justice system after experiencing sexual assault, intimate partner violence, or other forms of gender-based harm. NJCCS offers counselling and support tailored to this experience, including:

  • Individual Counselling: Focused on healing, safety planning, and emotional processing during legal proceedings.

  • Court Support: Emotional support during trials or hearings, including accompaniment as needed.

  • System Navigation: Assistance understanding legal options and referrals to legal services or advocacy partners.

  • Trauma-Informed Care: Grounded in empathy, cultural sensitivity, and empowerment.

Women Who Have Been Charged

Some women become involved in the criminal justice system as a result of past or ongoing trauma. These may include women who have defended themselves against abuse or acted in ways shaped by long-term victimization. NJCCS offers services that support their rehabilitation, growth, and healing:

  • Court-ordered counselling: Fulfilling legal requirements (e.g., anger management, trauma recovery sessions).

  • Psychoeducation & Coping Strategies: Exploring healthy responses to stress, triggers, and trauma.

  • Support for Rebuilding: Encouragement in re-establishing healthy relationships, self-worth, and community integration.

We believe in second chances, and that healing and justice can go hand in hand. If you are currently involved in the legal system and seeking support, NJCCS is here to walk with you.
